2020 is an exciting year for us: Sennheiser turns 75! We would like to celebrate this very special anniversary with you - our employees, customers, friends and followers. Because you are the people behind our achievements and fantastic projects.
Sometimes, life takes an unexpected turn. This is also true for our anniversary year: Since the beginning of the year the corona virus has affected everyday life in more and more countries. For us this means: Instead of many happy meetings with you, our customers and the Sennheiser fans, trade shows and events were canceled, and we had to temporarily close our offices in China. Now, we are taking precautionary measures at our headquarters in Germany and further locations. But somehow this situation also binds us together closely with our colleagues all around the world. Because no matter where – at home office, in divided groups at the office or in separated shifts in our production – we still work on creating very special sound experiences and unique moments. This month in Sennheiser history – September 1968:
We revolutionized the audio world with the first-ever open-backed headphones, the HD 414.
For the first time ever, ears could hear in a way that they are accustomed to: open and free in space. The sound can travel to the ear drum more naturally and clearly than in closed models.
Not only was the HD 414 exciting for its advances in sound technology, but was the first headphone to feature bright colored foam ear pads (blue, red, green, orange and yellow).
The first 10 years of production, the headphones had a grey headband with colored ear pads but a few years later, we changed the design for a black headband and the famous yellow ear pads.
It's no surprise the HD 414 triggered an absolute boom in headphones sales. Even today, the HD 414, which has long since gained cult status, is still the bestselling headphones in the world, selling more than 10 million units to date. The open-back principle has also become a staple in the development of high-end headphones.
Fun fact: prior to launch, Prof. Fritz Sennheiser asked our sales team for a forecast. They were not totally convinced of the headphone, so they calculated 500 pieces per year. That didn't dissuade Professor Sennheiser who decided to produce 5,000 pieces as he truly believed in the HD 414.
He was right. In the end we sold 50,000 units in one year.
